home improvements, part 2

Our house's previous owners were very well know by the local police, in fact at one time the head of the house was numero uno on their most wanted list. Our neighbors have told us they don't miss them. The very first time we walked in this house I thought to myself "this door would have to go if Terry buys this place", and last month it finally happened. The reason I mentioned the previous owners was because it explains why it appeared the door had been kicked in or jimmied and then repaired at least once or more.
The best part about our new door was what we paid for it. The guy at Lowes mispriced when he ordered it. We paid $525 for it, then Terry got an email from Lowes a few days later giving us another discount on it, bringing the final cost down to $409 for it. When the guy called to tell me the door was in, he informed me about his error, and that Lowes was going to honor the lower price. He told me he should have charged us $1,051. What a deal...
We've added a matching storm door now as well.

My old neighbor and good friend Tim (who is a contractor with all the cool tools) helped me put in the door. Well more than helped, it would have taken me several days to try this myself, instead of the 6 hours it did take...

We hit a snag at one point, and couldn't get the door to fit past a built in buttress, and after sussing out some ideas, I said "how about I plane the wood down?" I was surprised that Tim didn't know what a planer was, but in this modern age of power tools I guess old fashion hand tools have faded away. This planer has been in my family for over a hundred years that I know of (I believe it may have been my great-grandfathers), and stills works great!

Ta-Da! The inside is off white with a nice colonial molding around the door.

My old man has a few of those planes...he's planed a few of our doorways over the years! :o)

Lovely door, lovely deal. Love that you used a family heirloom to put it in!

Looks VERY nice! The molding around the door is an excellent way to dress it up!

Are you doing 3 1/2"window casing and 7" crown molding and 7"baseboards inside ?
It'll add quite a bit to your resale value when the time comes because the appearance is so lovely.

I love the door! =]

I think it was 7th grade that I took old fashioned wood shop and made a small coffee table. We had to use hand planers on our projects then. I really enjoyed that class. Good to know the 'old' way is alive and well!

hey John,
I never said I didn't know what a plane was. I said that I didn't know how to use one. =) The only time I ever tried to use a 'manual' hand planer, it didn't turn out too well. I'll stick to the powered ones I think. ;) You're a good guy, to bad you moved away.
