home improvements, part 1

It took 60 cubic yards of dirt (delivered in three loads and we could have used more), 6 hours of work with a John Deere tractor, five large dump trucks of debris removed, a 24 head backyard sprinkler system (and a homemade front yard system), and hydroseeding to get our 14,000 square foot lot looking good again. Oh, and I finished off the last 24 feet of the back fence myself after getting a ridiculously high bid from a fencing company. The yard had been neglected for over 3 years, and we suspect many more years before that. We had nicknamed it the savanna...

The picture below shows where the previous owners dumped all their trash in this back corner of the property because they didn't want to pay for pickup. Other neighbors have told us the mountain of garbage reached the top of the fence. When Terry bought the place most of it had been removed, but we still found old rotten timbers, large heavy metal poles, and general trash in the ground. The wood fence was unfinished for multiple reasons, and the owners of the property behind us use their backyard as a junk car yard. I'll write about them later.

'Nice' so tell me how many beers did you consume whilst doing this ? Whilst I was In Winnipeg in July this year, we lived on a farm and anytime during the day they would finish a job and crack open the beers! Or have a beer before the job, go visit a neighbour, have a beer, a chat ... I came home an alcoholic Lol...

Indi,
Never been a beer drinker.
However, more than a few bottles of scotch were consumed during this project ;)

It looks beautiful, and you will earn the eternal good will of the neighbors for making the yard look better.

Wow, that looks amazing!

I'm keen to do something similar with my small patch of dirt, but haven't made the time to do so!

And the incessant rain.... ugh.

You did such a beautiful job at changing the backyard! What a lovely improvement!

Too bad about the junk-y neighbors. Ugh. I never can understand how people are indifferent to their property looking nice and let it go to ruin, which basically tanks not onlt their property values but also drags everyone else's down on the street.

VK: Thanks. Unfortunately the projects are piling up here again, no time no time ;)

Ute: Nope, no utes that I can see...

ASM: yep, they tell us how happy they are to see the house getting fixed up all the time.

Thanks Chrissy!

Ha Gillette, handymanish, love it!

Thanks XL.

Kimba: Thanks, I was going through my photos the other day and came across one of Butch and C the day I took the photos of K's tables. Good memories. Thanks for the b-day wishes, late or not :)

Cath: The rain about did us in as well, ending up with alot of weeds growing in the fresh dirt before we could get it hydroseeded. Grrrr.

So true Annie, thankfully the effect of their property on the next street over is not as bad for us.

Not yet Tom, but the dog is still digging...

Doug: send me an email with the details and I'll find you. fusion77@gmail.com

Thanks Cat!
