paying it forward...

Last night I turned the keys and garage door openers over to a family that has leased my house for a year. I can't quite say how it made me feel, my old neighbor Tim, Terry, and even the couple who is renting said it must feel a little strange, and it does. But it's also a relief to finally have it rented.
The couple is very nice, with longtime steady jobs and good references. They appreciated my willingness to rent to them even though they just finished going through a bankruptcy due to huge medical bills accrued when their 8 year old son was gravely ill. They told me they have to be out of their home they had built themselves 5 years ago by the end of the month and were having trouble finding a place to live. I told them I had been through a bankruptcy myself and knew how some people treated my wife and I back then. I related the story about how when we were trying to buy a house 12 years ago, we kept getting dismissed (sometimes rudely) by the real estate agents and salespeople when we'd explain what happened. It wasn't until we met Bill who was selling the homes in our tract that we found a sympathetic ear. Because Bill had gone through a bankruptcy himself a few years before, and he was the first person to say hey, just because you filed bankruptcy doesn't mean you're a bad risk, lets talk. And thanks to him we got our house.
So I feel really good about helping this couple get back on their feet, as they put it, and they promised me they'll take really good care of my little house too.
I believe them.

Good for you, Fuse. You may have (emphasising may have) taken a risk, but you did right for your soul in doing so. There should be more people like you in this world. HUGS x
