The coffee house is his usual stop on the way home from work, and to him, a quirk that he prefers his double mocha latte at the end of the day, instead of the majority who like theirs in the morning. He had been in that group for a long time, but ever since his wife had died two years ago, many of his routines had changed, including this one. Another change he kept to himself was his enjoyment of something fun and innocent: flirting. He did it with every women he met, young and old, nice personalities or not, with no care for ulterior motives. He had decided life is too short, and at 45, he wanted to keep himself feeling young and alive, and this was one way to do it.
Then today, something unexpected, out of the blue.
The attractive barista, who always seemed to be working when he came in, gave him a small, folded piece of paper with his usual $1.32 in change, and had he not looked twice, would have just deposited it with the rest of his change in the tip jar. He stepped away from the counter and opened the note with his right hand, his drink warming his left. It simply said I get off work in 3 hours, meet me outside if you want. He looked back up at her, but she was busy with the next customer. He looked again at the note, then up at her once more, and this time she was looking right at him with a gaze from her deep green eyes that he couldn't quite read, and then it was quickly gone as the customer drew back her attention. He wanted to ask her… actually he wasn't sure what he wanted to ask her, but the line was long, so instead he slowly headed out the door into the evening dusk, wondering many things in his head as he walked home.
Three hours later finds him waiting outside the café with only the light of a street lamp illuminating him. A few minutes later she steps out of the darkened shop with her two coworkers; they say their goodbyes to each other, and head off into the night. She turns to him, her long brown hair swinging with her movement, and smiles.
"Hi, I'm glad you came back, I didn't know if you would."
He tried to come up with something that would make him sound cool, but the words eluded him, and his nervousness was apparent, to him at least.
"I've never had a note with my change before" was the best he could come up with. He groaned inwardly at that but she laughed, with a soft gentleness that he immediately liked.
"Will you walk me home? I live only a couple blocks away"
"Sure"
She grabs his hand. Unexpected. Her hands are young, soft and warm.
They walk in silence, his mind wondering where this could lead.
"How about I take you out to the Ironhorse after you change, my treat?"
He likes the restaurant bar that is a local favorite. Good place to eat, and get to know someone; great drinks too.
"Hmmm, maybe. I'm kind of tired tonight, but it might be nice."
Before he can respond, she pulls out her cell phone, sending a text message before flipping the phone closed and putting it away in her day pack.
A few minutes later they are in front of an old Victorian home, one of many in the area that have been converted into multiple apartment units. They walk up the wide white steps into a small lobby that has three sets of stairs leading off it. As they start up the ones on the right, a door slams and he sees a woman heading down. The woman flips the barista the finger as they pass on the stairs.
"Love you too Michelle"
Michelle rolls her eyes, muttering something about always with the older dudes.
He frowns slightly at her comment, wondering.
“Your roommate?"
"Yes, she's a bit of a bitch, but always pays her share of the rent on time"
She pulls out her keys, opens the door and they enter the living room. A table lamp lights the room dimly. As he shuts the door behind him, she drops her pack on the couch, and quickly turns back around, pushing him against the now closed entrance. She leans in against him, pressing her body against his, and kisses him with a deep hunger.
Unexpected.
But after a brief moment of surprise he recovers as his lips melt into hers. Their tongues meet and dance within, passion is ignited and begins to burn, consuming his rational thoughts, and leaving only lust in its place.
